It's Hurricane Season - Be Prepared!

June 1 marks the beginning of the Hurricane Season. Let’s all hope it is a quiet season, but let’s also take the time to get prepared!  As dialysis patients you have additional preparations and planning you need to do to prepare in case of an emergency.  Particularly how and where you will receive your dialysis treatment during an emergency, where can you get your medications, what packaged food items you eat and still stick to that renal friendly diet you need to stay healthy.

Even if you are not in a coastal area vulnerable to hurricanes summer is also a peak time for wild fires and flash floods.  We are also in the midst of a pandemic influenza virus.   Everyone needs to take measures to ensure they are prepared for an emergency situation.  Below are links to some helpful planning tools designed especially for dialysis patients.

DPC Endorses PEAK Program
DPC endorsed the recently launched national health care program “Promoting Excellence and Accountability in Kidney Care” (PEAK) Campaign, established by Kidney Care Partners.  Participants in the new voluntary quality improvement campaign have pledged to reduce mortality among first-year dialysis patients by 20 percent by the end of 2012, which, if successful, could extend the lives of 10,000 patients.

Influenza and You
The H1N1 Flu outbreak continues to grow in the United States and internationally. This virus is contagious from person to person. Please follow the link below for more information on how to protect yourself and what to do if you believe you may have been infected.  It is important that if you do have symptoms that you contact your dialysis clinic so arrangements can be made for you to receive your dialysis without infecting other patients.  DPC will continue to keep you updated on this virus as more information becomes available.
